We also can't seem to convince her doggies can't fly. She just pushes off from where ever we are holding her - thankfully we always have a good grip so she doen't fall. She's a blessing!

Surviving the madness

This past few months seem to me to be death months. Months when a lot of people seem to be leaving this earth for the next plane of existence. Both famous people and average people seem to be leaving. Every day I read about someone else who has passed on. It seems to me that there are times in the year or months where people leave the earth.

It's funny, I am not afraid of death but yet I am. I guess most people are afraid of death, especially since we really don't know what happens when and after we die. Do we continue in some form or just sleep forever? I believe we continue but not in bodily form. And when someone dies, I find that I don't cry for them. I know they have gone to a better place. But I do cry for those who are left behind. The hole in our lives is often very great and although we learn to live with the loss, we never forget the person.

I think Americans don't really face death much. We tend to avoid talking about death and try our best to not talk about it, even when someone we love has died. I sometimes envy those whose cultures honor and celebrate death and the dead. Like the culture in Mexico. Every year they honor the dead and celebrate their lives on the Day of the Dead. Too bad Americans can't honor and celebrate the dead more. We need to just to help us cope better with this aspect of life.

I'm thinking of beginning a tradition of celebrating the Day of the Dead and honoring my ancestors. Most of the time, the cultures use the end of October to celebrate and honor their dead. October 31st has always been a day to remember those who have gone before us. I think I will join in the celebrations this year.

I'm going to read up on some of the celebrations and rituals and work to create my own celebration. I know that Earth-Based religions celebrate Samhain which is also a way to remember lost loved ones. I have found some good information on beliefnet.com about Samhain and other rituals celebrating the ancestors. If you'd like to join me, drop me a line at claudiabarber@lycos.com.
