When I was a kid, we never went to church in the summer. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, we spent every weekend and often some weeks at our 1/2 acre property near Chelsea, MI. At that time, we camped. Actually almost everyone camped. There were only a few cottages around the lake. So we spent everyday outside, playing, swimming, riding our bikes, boating, or just snoozing in the sun.
And even though we didn't go to church, my mom and dad still had a strong faith. I guess they didn't really NEED church to increase their faith. They enjoyed the friends and they loved singing in the choir. But they didn't seem to need church to strengthen their faith. They already had that.
Some people will say you must go to church every Sunday to keep your faith strong, but I'm not so sure about that. After all, for me, I find God out in nature much more often than I find God in a dark church building. And it's just as easy to read the bible outside in my garden on my swing as it is in a church building.
Think about it. Jesus spent most of his life outside and gave many of his most powerful sermons on a mountain, on a plain, and on the shores of Lake Galilee. He healed people on the side of the road, outside by a communal bath, or in the streets.
So why do we need to go inside a church building to get closer to God? Instead, let's all go outside and we can find God in the singing of the birds, the buzzing of the bees, and the beauty of God's lovely flowers. Give it a try, you just might be surprised.
